Tropics basketball is delighted to report that one the Club's newest members, Laura Nix, was chosen by Basketball Wales (BW) to represent the country at FIBA's 5th International Development Camp for U15 Girls in Postojna, Slovenia in July 2011.  This annual camp is run by FIBA to develop the game; each member country from Europe is invited to send 2 girls, a coach and a referee, to be trained by the best coaches in Europe. Laura was asked by BW to give a write up of her experience, which is posted below:

"The camp in Slovenia was absolutely brilliant! It was, admittedly, the hardest week of work I've ever done in my life, because of working on a schedule every day, but such an amazing experience. Working with the best from countries all over Europe was incredibly rewarding and got me working to my full potential as Meg and I were two of the youngest in the camp. I learnt so much just from watching others play. The coaches were incredibly helpful and taught us really well. Although the practise and games were exhilarating in themselves, for me, my favourite part of the week was the trip to the beach. All the hard work made the trip really appreciated and gave us a good chance to relax and unwind (Although we spent the afternoon jumping off the pier instead of sunbathing!). It was nice to make new friends and meet new people from all over Europe, and I was particularly amazed how well all the other countries spoke English! The week made me come back to the UK a different basketball player.  This camp was a chance of a life time for me and would've been too big an opportunity to miss out on. I was really appreciative to have been picked and enjoyed every minute of it!"

This is the second consecutive year that a West Wales girl has been selected to attend; Laura follows Nia Espie before her.  Both girls are products of Preseli Storm club, who should be commended as they are clearly providing good training.  Laura is a talented young athlete; as well as playing basketball, she also swims, plays cricket and runs competitively.  The Club looks forward to seeing her become an important member of our girls team, which we are aiming to launch in the very near future.
